Shillong, Sep 8: Most street vendors in Shillong have been allotted designated vending spaces, the Meghalaya High Court noted on Monday while hearing the PIL filed by Andrew Aibok Jyrwa.
The PIL was disposed of on July 29 and was listed again to check compliance by the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB).
SMB counsel S. Dey filed an affidavit-cum-status report detailing steps taken. The Court noted most vendors have been settled.
Referring to paragraph 12 of the affidavit, the bench observed that settlement of the remaining eligible vendors is continuing and that SMB, in coordination with the Provisional Town Vending Committee and other stakeholders, shall continue to facilitate their resettlement at designated zones under the Meghalaya Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2023.
Dey assured the court the process for the remaining vendors would be completed at the earliest. The petitioner’s counsel submitted he had no objection as the July 29 order had been complied with.
Recording the submissions, the Division Bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh closed the matter, saying no further orders were required.
