Nongpoh, Aug 28: A five-year-old boy drowned in Ri Bhoi while three of a family were injured in a landslide on the Assam-Meghalaya border amid heavy rain on Friday.
The boy, Mewanshwa Mawblei, was swept away by strong currents at Nonkchigittim village in Killing area while playing near water. Following overnight showers, water level rose suddenly.
Locals and police launched a search and found him downstream around 11 am. He was taken to PA Sangma International Medical College but was declared brought dead.
Police said no foul play was suspected and the body was handed over to family after formalities without post-mortem on family request.
In the second incident at Chota Tandu, 13th Mile, a hillside collapsed at 7:30 am onto a house while occupants were asleep. The kitchen was buried and boundary wall collapsed.
Three injured — Chandra Marak (35), Sunita Sangma (25) and seven-year-old Riknosha Sangma — were rushed to ARHI Hospital. The family suffered extensive property loss.
