Shillong, Aug 27: Opposition Leader Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday questioned the withdrawal of recruitment notification for Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
Taking part in a short duration discussion on education, Sangma said the university had on June 27 invited applications for professor, associate professor and assistant professor posts, but withdrew it on July 23 over pay structure concerns.
He said faculty members expressed frustration and urged the government to reconsider and support the Board of Governors’ decision.
Sangma also flagged a proposal to fill retired government school teachers’ posts on fixed pay of around ₹30,000, questioning if such decisions were taken with Cabinet approval.
He cautioned against blanket rationalisation before filling vacancies, saying it could hit accreditation and affect poor students.
He said the government has a binding responsibility towards education as a social sector, referring to the Right to Education, National Education Policy and other statutory provisions governing the sector.
Sangma also flagged leaking school roofs after the recent hailstorm and called for reviving Meghalaya’s education legacy.
