Shillong, Aug 27: The Achik Society for Ownership of Native Grounds (ASONG) has urged the government to expedite the declaration of the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) of Balpakram National Park.
In a letter to the Chief Wildlife Warden on Thursday, the group said the delay is causing hardship in South Garo Hills.
People are unable to lawfully use minor minerals and natural materials for domestic, agricultural and community needs due to uncertainty over ESZ boundaries and restrictions, it said.
ASONG said while it supports conservation of Balpakram’s biodiversity, a clear, legally notified and demarcated ESZ is needed to balance protection with legitimate livelihood and basic needs.
It sought interim guidelines for essential domestic and community activities till final notification.
