Shillong, Aug 26: Leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma today sought details from the Meghalaya government on the environmental studies and clearances carried out for the proposed Shillong Peak Ropeway.

Sangma raised the issue during Question Hour while participating in a discussion on tourism infrastructure projects following a question by Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin.

Dr Mukul Sangma questioned whether adequate assessments had been conducted to examine the project’s possible impact on the environment, wildlife, flora and fauna.

He also called for a more comprehensive approach to identifying tourist destinations in the state. The Songsak MLA said mapping should not be treated as a one time exercise, as several potential sites, including natural water bodies and areas with endangered species, were yet to be identified by the Tourism Department.

He suggested that the government undertake a detailed mapping exercise to identify such sites and develop connected tourism circuits instead of implementing projects individually.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the government had already carried out mapping of tourist destinations and that projects currently being taken up were selected based on the exercise. He added that the process was continuing as new tourism sites were identified.

According to the CM, the mapping was also used to identify clusters under the government’s homestay scheme. Proposals from other areas claiming tourism potential would be assessed before being considered.

Dr Mukul Sangma then specifically sought details on the environmental assessment carried out for the Shillong Peak Ropeway, which is being opposed by a number of residents in the area, who have expressed concerns regarding the 500-plus trees cut down and the supposed threat to water bodies, especially streams and springs that provide water to the city.

The CM said that environmental procedures had been followed. Ropeway projects, he added, were subject to prescribed requirements, including public hearings and forest clearance, and that the government had followed the guidelines laid down by the Centre.

Dr Mukul Sangma, however, said the assessment should look beyond the number of trees that could be affected and examine the broader impact on biodiversity and wildlife. He also referred to concerns raised by residents and asked the government to make the environmental assessment and public hearing details available for scrutiny.

The CM said the government could provide the house with the relevant guidelines and details of the procedures followed for the project.
