Shillong, Aug 26: Members of the various Bar Associations in the state will take out a peaceful march and sit-in demonstration on August 27 demanding removal of Amit Kumar as Advocate General of Meghalaya.
The decision was taken in a resolution adopted at the joint general body meeting of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association (HCBA) and Shillong Bar Association (SBA) on August 24.
According to the associations, the march will start and end at Centenary Junction, covering Barik Point, Malki Point, MPSC Building and Lower Lachumiere, to be followed by a sit-in demonstration at the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association premises.
A delegation will also submit a memorandum to the Governor of Meghalaya.
The associations also listed dos and don’ts for the march, directing members to maintain peace, not indulge in activities detrimental to dignity and interest of the Bar and legal fraternity, not wear apparel covering the face, participate in uniform, stick to the designated route and not shout derogatory slogans or use profanity during the march and sit-in.
The protest follows the associations’ demand for Kumar’s suspension over alleged remarks during a hearing that there are many sexual harassment cases within Shillong’s legal fraternity. They said they are unaware of such cases and Kumar refused to share details, besides flagging expenditure on Delhi lawyers and appointment of his son as state panel advocate.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday backed Kumar, saying he had not examined the remarks in detail but that the state is lucky to have him.
