Shillong, Aug 26: An Assam Police vehicle was gutted after it caught fire in the disputed Langpih area along the Assam-Meghalaya border early Wednesday.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS-01-DH-7347 and belonging to personnel posted at the Mawsikar Assam Police Camp, was parked by the roadside near Mawsikar village, a few metres from the camp, when the incident occurred around 4 am.
The matter was reported to Langpih Border Outpost in West Khasi Hills by the Mawsikar village headman.
Police questioned the headman, the village secretary and several locals as part of preliminary inquiry. While arson is suspected, police said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Inspection of the site did not yield any material evidence to confirm that the vehicle was deliberately set ablaze.
Both Assam and Meghalaya police are probing the incident.
