Shillong, Aug 22: The Meghalaya State Judicial Academy, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, organised a one-day workshop on the theme ‘The Laws Behind Road Safety: Learn the Rules, Respect the Road’ at the Meghalaya High Court yesterday.

The workshop brought together students, legal professionals and traffic officials to promote awareness of responsible road use and adherence to traffic rules.

Director of the Meghalaya State Judicial Academy, Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of creating greater awareness of road safety laws among citizens, particularly young road users.

During the first session, Additional SP (Traffic), Lovish Garg, along with Don Kitbor Koshy Mihsill, Judicial Magistrate First Class interacted with participants and responded to questions raised by students.

Speaking on the topic, Garg emphasised the importance of understanding the relationship between individual rights and road safety, stressing that personal choices on the road must not compromise the safety of other road users.

The workshop covered traffic violations and their legal consequences, importance of helmets and seat belts, e-Challan system, road accident prevention and investigation, safe driving practices and role of technology in improving road safety.

Participants were introduced to modern traffic-management technologies including Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, AI-based traffic monitoring, speed enforcement and emergency response systems.

Deputy SP Ri-Bhoi Varun Dkhar and DIG, BSF Shillong Sector, V.S. Rathore, were among the speakers who shared insights on road safety and traffic enforcement.

An interactive road safety quiz covering traffic signs, road rules, accident scenarios and Meghalaya-specific issues was also conducted.

The Traffic Branch also set up stalls where participants interacted with officials and received information on enforcement measures and technology-enabled traffic management.

The workshop concluded with a Road Safety Ambassador Pledge, reinforcing that safer roads require responsible behaviour, awareness and respect for traffic laws.
