Shillong, Aug 21: Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday said the state government must reflect public sentiment on the uranium mining issue and remain consistent, regardless of who is in power.
Reacting to the centre’s recent MMDR Act amendment passed in Parliament, Dr Sangma said while laws may change, Meghalaya’s stand cannot ignore history.
“Government of India definitely wanted uranium exploration here. It became a flashpoint. There was very strong opposition from stakeholders, people and civil society. It remained contentious for a long time,” he said.
Recalling his tenure as chief minister, he said the government then made it clear to Delhi that Meghalaya says no. “We prevailed. We took cognizance of the people’s sentiment and respected it. It wasn’t something unpleasant during my time,” he said.
“Governments may change, but the government doesn’t change. The chair changes. The stand must have continuity — in sync with what the people want. In a democracy, the government must represent the citizens,” he added.
On energy security, Dr Sangma said the world faces unprecedented challenges, but India now has options beyond uranium.
“Technologies have evolved. There are many alternatives available. The government doesn’t have to depend on its own uranium anymore,” he said.
He said the new MMDR amendment will have to be examined closely to ensure Meghalaya’s stand continues to mirror public opinion.
