Shillong, Aug 14: Three Meghalaya Police personnel and one Home Guard have been awarded service medals on the eve of Independence Day 2026.
Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma, Commandant Herbert Garnet Lyngdoh and Havildar Kmenlang Suting have been conferred the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) for valuable service characterised by resourcefulness and devotion to duty.
Home Guard personnel Lathindro D. Sangma has also been awarded the Meritorious Services Medal.
Overall, 1057 personnel of Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence and Correctional Services have been awarded Gallantry and Service Medals this year.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 301 Medal for Gallantry have been awarded. Of these, 272 are Police personnel and 29 are from Fire Service. Among the gallantry awardees, 197 are from Left Wing Extremism affected areas, 51 from Jammu & Kashmir region, 12 from the North-East and 41 from other regions. The Medal for Gallantry is awarded for conspicuous acts of gallantry in saving life and property or in preventing crime or arresting criminals.
For distinguished service, 92 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service have been awarded. These include 83 Police personnel, 4 from Fire Service, 3 from Civil Defence & Home Guard and 2 from Correctional Service.
A total of 664 Medal for Meritorious Service have also been awarded. Of these, 606 are to Police Service, 28 to Fire Service, 18 to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service and 12 to Correctional Service.
