Shillong, Aug 10: The Congress Party is more than a political organisation but the saviour of society, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent Pala said today.
Pala is set to contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election. His name was put forward by the MPCC but the party bosses in New Delhi have yet to formally give him the ticket.
Expressing confidence in performing well in the upcoming by-election, Pala said the Congress had already begun strengthening its organisational structure and claimed that around 80 percent of the organisational work had been completed. He said the party had completed work at the district and block levels and was now focusing on booth-level organisation.
He also sought to portray the Congress as an institution necessary for protecting society, saying, “If we see the Congress is weak and the society suffers. If the Congress is not doing well, the society suffers.”
The Congress president urged voters to view the party not merely as a political organisation but as a “saviour of the people.”
After three successive terms, Pala’s share of the vote crashed from 53.52 percent in 2019 to under 20 percent in 2024, with a reduction of more than 2 lakh votes as he lost to the Voice of the People Party (VPP) candidate Ricky AJ Syngkon. The latter’s death in February necessitated the by-election.
