Shillong, Aug 6: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sohra Civil Sub-Division, has partially lifted the ban on tourist activities, allowing access to Mawsawa Falls via Laitlyndop village with immediate effect.
An earlier order issued on August 4 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita had prohibited tourism at Weisawdong Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Mawsawa Falls and Arliang Riat View Point following a law and order dispute among the villages of Laitduh, Umblai, Mawphu and Laitlyndop under Hima Sohra.
After a fresh assessment, SDM Mark A. Challam found that the route to Mawsawa Falls through Laitlyndop village is not affected by the dispute and does not pose any immediate threat to public peace.
As per the modified order dated August 5, the approach to Mawsawa Falls via Laitlyndop has been excluded from the prohibitory order. For this route, restrictions on tourist activities, collection of entry fees, assembly of five or more persons, and carrying of arms or weapons will not apply, unless directed otherwise by the competent authority.
The ban, however, continues at Weisawdong Falls, Dainthlen Falls, Mawsawa Falls via other routes, and at Arliang Riat View Point.
