Shillong, Aug 3: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sohra Civil Sub-Division has banned cooking and open fires at public places with immediate effect from August 3, citing environmental damage and wildfire risks caused by tourists.
In an order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, SDM Mark A. Challam said tourists were cooking along roadsides, lay-bys, viewpoints and open spaces, especially on the Shillong–Sohra–Shella Road.
The order noted this has led to dumping of plastic, food waste and disposable items, causing environmental degradation, public nuisance, traffic obstruction and attracting stray animals. The use of LPG cylinders, kerosene stoves and firewood without safety measures was also flagged as a serious fire hazard to forests and public property.
As per the order, no person shall cook, prepare food, light any fire or use LPG, kerosene, charcoal stoves, firewood or barbeque grills on roadsides, parking areas, viewpoints, forest areas or any other public place within Sohra Sub-Division.
The prohibition applies to the Shillong–Sohra–Shella Road and all other public roads and places in the sub-division. Littering is also banned and all waste must be removed and disposed only at authorised points.
The ban will not apply to designated picnic sites or locations approved by the competent authority or concerned Dorbar Shnong where waste disposal and fire safety arrangements are available.
The SDM has directed police, executive magistrates, forest, tourism, PWD officials and Dorbar Shnongs to ensure strict enforcement.
Violators are liable for prosecution under BNSS, BNS and relevant environmental laws, the order said.
