Shillong, Jul 24: Twelve cattle were killed after a landslide buried a cowshed at Pahamkynchoh village in Khanapara, Ri Bhoi district, on Thursday evening.
Torrential rain lashed parts of Ri Bhoi between 3 pm and 5 pm. Around 5 pm, a major landslide hit Pahamkynchoh. The extent of the damage became clear on Friday morning when villagers found the entire cowshed under debris.
Owner Shiva Poudel said all 12 cattle inside were killed. He estimated his losses at ₹50–60 lakh. He alleged the landslide was triggered by construction of a large building uphill, which had destabilised the slope.
Poudel has filed a complaint against the building owner and is seeking compensation. He also urged authorities to build proper retaining structures to protect downhill residents.
Villagers said they have informed the local MLA, who assured them of an inspection and action.
