Shillong, Jun 26: East Khasi Hills district has streamlined the birth and death registration process by allowing block development officers (BDOs) to act as executive magistrates.
In an order issued on Friday, the Deputy Commissioner invoked powers under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 that grants BDOs the authority to handle tasks such as registration, correction, cancellation, and delayed registration of birth and death certificates.
Previously, residents from rural areas under the district had to make the trip to Shillong to obtain necessary certificates or corrections, a process that could be cumbersome and time-consuming. Now, by submitting applications directly to their local block development offices, residents can access these essential services more conveniently.
