Shillong, Jun 21: The International Day of Yoga was observed at the Indian Air Force Eastern Air Command Headquarters in Upper Shillong today under the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the programme and joined hundreds of participants in performing yoga asanas and breathing exercises. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, civil servants, Air Force officers and others were also present.
Singh said yoga plays a key role in fostering a healthier and more balanced society. He encouraged people of all age groups to incorporate yoga into their daily routines to enhance overall well-being.
Sangma described the experience as “wonderful” and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making International Yoga Day a globally celebrated event. He also thanked the Defence Minister for celebrating the occasion in Shillong alongside the armed forces, state administration and government officials.
Elsewhere, Lok Bhavan celebrated the day with more than 200 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets from various institutions across Shillong taking part in a programme there.
The programme commenced with a mass yoga session where the cadets, along with officials, participated in various yoga asanas and breathing exercises.
HC Choudhary, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor of Meghalaya, attended the programme and appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the NCC cadets.
NCC cadets were also involved at Umiam Lake where a total of 68 cadets participated in the event, including 29 from KV NEPA, 10 from UCC College and 24 from PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Umroi Cantonment.
Other Yoga Day events were held at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and the Courtyard by Marriott hotel.
