Nongpoh, Jun 13: A young labourer lost his life while another sustained critical injury after a concrete slab of a building under renovation suddenly collapsed in Nongpoh on Saturday morning.
Sources said the incident occurred at around 10 am at a building owned by Ngaitlang Dhar in the heart of Nongpoh town. The building was undergoing renovation and demolition work when the slab of an upper floor unexpectedly caved in, trapping two workers who were engaged at the site.
The deceased has been identified as Jelin Mangu (20), while Solar Lymphuid (19) suffered serious injuries and was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for treatment.
Two other workers, Nalor Myrsing (19) and Turbor Damlong (22), narrowly escaped the mishap without sustaining any injuries. All four are residents of Umpathaw village in Ri-Bhoi district.
Soon after the accident, local residents and bystanders rushed to the spot and joined rescue efforts. The injured worker was rescued first and taken to hospital, while rescuers later managed to pull out Jelin Mangu from beneath the debris. Unfortunately, he had succumbed to his injuries before he could be rescued.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation. The body of the deceased was taken to Civil Hospital Nongpoh for post-mortem examination and other legal formalities.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether any negligence was involved in the incident.
