Shillong, May 29: Voice of the People Party (VPP) president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has taken a swipe at the proscribed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) after the latter criticised the VPP for asking the public for donations even though its leader is a crorepati.
“I should thank the general secretary of the organisation for giving an account of my wealth. I would have been more thankful had they also told how the wealth of Ardent was earned,” Basaiawmoit said during a meeting in Sohra on Friday.
He stated that he believes that had he only concentrated on his family he would not have faced threats to his life but he loves the jaidbynriew and that puts him in danger.
“I understand that, as I go along and try to bring change in society, the citizens are looking up to the VPP and the more the threat to my life,” Basaiawmoit said, adding that there can be no going back on the VPP’s journey.
Even if harm does come to him, the party supremo said, others will be ready to step into his shoes. “This journey that we have promised to revive, restore and transform will only grow stronger,” he added.
On the recent announcement of the VPP to protest against the state government by surrounding the state Secretariat, Basaiawmoit said that this was done because there is an urgency as a number of youths have complained of corruption in the government job recruitment process.
The VPP chief also clarified that when the party alleges that there are corrupt practices in appointments it does not mean that all successful candidates got it through unfair means or all officers are corrupt.
