Shillong, May 15:Police have received permission from the court to exhume the body of Trophimos Khongmawloh, a man who was allegedly killed by villagers in Pynter last month.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the Sub-Divisional Officer of Pynursla will fix a date for the exhumation.
Speaking about the case, Syiem said the exhumation is necessary for a post-mortem examination.
The victim’s father, Netnobiweit Khongsdoh, had filed an FIR on May 5 following which a murder case was registered against the headman of Pynter and members of the Village Defence Party (VDP).
Eleven persons suspected of involvement in the case have secured anticipatory bail to avoid being arrested.
Syiem said that the murder took place on April 7. Khongmawloh was reportedly beaten to death, according to his father, who recounted seeing blood and severe head wounds on his son’s body when it was returned to the family. Khongsdoh dismissed claims by villagers that his son had died after consuming poison. However, after watching a video related to the incident, he said he found it impossible to believe the claim, stating that the assault inflicted on his son appeared extremely brutal and excessive.
The SP said that VDP activity cannot be used as an excuse for actions that lead to death. He made it clear that no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.
Khongsdoh has appealed to the authorities to take strict action against those allegedly involved in the killing of his son.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, he claimed that he saw severe bleeding injuries on his son’s head when he went to view the body, which had been laid out after his death.
In the FIR, he stated that the assault that led to his son’s death was carried out by the village headman, Fullmoon Khongsdoh, along with members of the VDP.
