Shillong, May 14: A new fleet of police vehicles was flagged off at the Police Officers’ Mess in Golflink, here today aimed at improving mobility and public service delivery capabilities across the state.
A total of 95 vehicles have been acquired, of which 79 of these vehicles were secured through funding under the central assistance to state police scheme. The newly added fleet consists of 20 Maruti Jimny vehicles, 19 heavy Tata truck troop carriers, five Mahindra mini trucks, various bus troop carriers with different seating capacities, eight Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID, all amounting to approximately ₹30 crore.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasised the government’s commitment to law enforcement, stating, “The maintenance of law and order remains one of the most critical responsibilities of any government.” He expressed the importance of police modernisation, reiterating plans for recruiting over 3,000 personnel.
Sangma also commended the professionalism of the police force in maintaining stability, especially in sensitive situations. He commended the force for its professionalism, discipline, and restraint.
Referring to the recent tensions in Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills, he noted that the police played a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability on the ground while the government continued dialogue with stakeholders and counterparts in Assam on the interstate boundary issue.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s dedication to support and enhance the capabilities of the Meghalaya police for improved public safety across the state.
Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang was present at the programme along with senior government officials, police officers, and personnel of the Meghalaya Police.
Meanwhile, officials emphasised the importance of ensuring effective utilisation and proper maintenance of the vehicles so that they continue to contribute towards better service delivery and public safety across the state.
