Editor,
Every institution, from banks to schools, tries to operate with minimal staffing. So, every time an election comes, it become a nightmare for bank customers, students, and also for employees, as many staff members are sent for election training and duties. It is ironic that a country experiencing a demographic dividend is actively curtailing employment opportunities.
In a Laurel and Hardy movie, to get water to douse the fire, Laurel crossed a shallow, knee-deep river to reach a hand pump. Our policymakers are repeating the same mistakes. They are eager to use more machines like the hand pump in the film, yet ignore a vast pool of labour just like Laurel ignored the knee-deep river.
