Shillong, Apr 30: A family holiday to Sohra took a devastating turn when a 15-year-old girl from Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, drowned at Weisawdong Falls.
The unfortunate event occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the girl slipped while attempting to take a photograph near the falls and was swept away by the strong currents.
The search for the missing teenager began the same day but was unsuccessful until Thursday morning. Local residents discovered her body around 7:30 am and alerted the police.
A joint team, including the police search and rescue team and fire and emergency services, retrieved the body at about 10 am. It was subsequently taken to the Sohra Community Health Centre for a post-mortem examination.
Police have urged tourists to exercise caution near waterfalls and fast-flowing streams, especially during the pre-monsoon period when currents are strong.
