Shillong, Mar 28:  Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today stated that the key pillar of progress in Meghalaya has been political stability.

Stating that stability has enabled consistent governance and long-term planning, Sangma said that the government does not claim to have achieved everything but laid a clear direction for the future.

“Without stability, development is not possible. Over the last eight years, we have ensured a stable political environment that allowed us to pursue our vision and take decisions in the best interest of the state,” he said at a celebration to commemorate eight years of the MDA held at the SRGT Football Ground here.

He said the state has navigated numerous challenges while also leveraging significant opportunities to move forward with purpose and determination. “Today, as we look back, we acknowledge both the challenges we faced and the opportunities we embraced. With the support of like-minded leaders and the people of the state, we have been able to create the momentum necessary to take Meghalaya forward,” he said.

Stating that the government has adopted an infrastructure-led growth model to steer Meghalaya forward, he highlighted that investments have been made, with 1,576 projects initiated in the Khasi region alone, and approximately Rs 21,000 crore directed towards initiatives in the Jaintia Hills.

The chief minister provided insights into major developments, such as large-scale road projects and enhancements to tourism infrastructure, which bolster the area’s economic potential.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive growth, Chief Minister Sangma reported that several welfare schemes have been successfully implemented. Notable programs like the Prime scheme have disbursed about Rs 32.7 crore over five years, aiming to directly benefit citizens. Investments in the homestay sector and grassroots music demonstrate a focus on boosting local livelihoods and cultural heritage.

Furthermore, education reforms have positively impacted nearly 100,000 students through scholarships, reinforcing the commitment to empowering the youth, he added.

Reiterating the government’s balanced approach, the Chief Minister addressed concerns regarding expenditure on festivals and events. “These efforts are not undertaken at the cost of farmers, students, or the health sector. Our approach ensures balanced and inclusive growth,” he said.

The chief minister also felicitated 37 village heads recognising their leadership roles under the Green Meghalaya program. 128 Community Halls under MegLife supported by JICA and 34 Warehouse & Common Facility Centres under CM Elevate were also virtually inaugurated by the Chief Minister during the occasion.
