Shillong, Mar 23: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed the State government to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the children of a pregnant woman, who died of medical negligence at the Maternal and Child Hospital in Jowai.
The Commission, in its order issued today said the compensation aims to support the victim’s children in coping with the loss of their mother.
The MHRC said an enquiry conducted by the Health and Family Welfare Department found multiple lapses in the handling of the case.
The rights panel had taken suo motu case after a pregnant woman, Pynche Bareh from Jalaphet in East Jaintia Hills, died at the hospital on June 5, 2025. Her family alleged negligence, stating that they had to repeatedly call for attention to the patient and that the hospital staff did not respond promptly.
