Shillong, Mar 18: Governor CH Vijayashankar has approved the list of ten executive members of the Dhormonath Ch Sangma-led Executive Committee in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
Stevie M Marak has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief Executive Member.
Alongside Marak, nine other EC members are Sengbath R. Marak, Cherak W. Momin, Arbinstone B. Marak, Crozier G. Momin, Henen R. Sangma, Alphonsush R. Marak, Grahambell A. Sangma, Ashabell D. Shira, and Nehru D. Sangma.
A notification, issued by the District Council Affairs Department today, said that the appointments were made under Rule 20 read with Rule 19 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951 (as amended), and on the advice of the Chief Executive Member of the GHADC.
The state government had extended the tenure of the GHADC by six months, from April 18 to October 18, 2026, following violence in the Garo Hills region over the participation of non-tribals in tribal council polls.
Following deterioration in the law and order situation, the government initially postponed the elections, scheduled to be held on April 10.
The decision to extend the council’s tenure came hours after Albinush R Marak resigned as the chief executive member (CEM) amid a no-confidence motion by 21 members of the council. The GHADC then elected Dhormonath Ch Sangma as the new CEM and constituted a fresh executive committee.
