Shillong, Feb 26: United Democratic Party (UDP) president and Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh has brushed aside speculation about internal rifts within the party, asserting that he remains focused on constructive engagement and the larger interest of the state.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, Metbah dismissed suggestions of discord, maintaining that he approaches both politics and legislative proceedings with a positive outlook. He said discussions held inside the Assembly are meant to serve the welfare of the people and should be viewed in that spirit.
During the ongoing Budget Session, former minister Paul Lyngdoh (also of the UDP) twice sharply questioned the Power Minister over the prevailing electricity situation in the state. His pointed interventions sparked speculation in political circles about possible resentment, particularly after Paul was dropped from the cabinet last year to make way for Metbah. Paul has, on several occasions, publicly conveyed his dissatisfaction over his removal.
Responding to queries about perceived differences with Paul, the West Shillong MLA, Metbah expressed surprise over the line of questioning and denied any misunderstanding. Reiterating his stance, Metbah said he does not harbour negative views towards colleagues and prefers to look at matters constructively rather than through a lens of suspicion.
The UDP chief underlined that the Assembly remains the appropriate forum for raising concerns and debating issues. He pointed out that matters flagged by legislators are duly noted and acted upon at the right time. According to him, members across party lines generally contribute meaningful suggestions aimed at public welfare. The Assembly – not public marketplaces – is the proper platform for addressing governance issues, he added.
