Shillong, Feb 26: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress today issued a condemnation of the “irresponsible and divisive remarks” made by Sunil Deodhar of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) regarding the Christian community in Meghalaya.
Deodhar had been invited to address an indigenous faith conference in Pynter, under Pynursla sub-division, recently where he made a statement that has been castigated by the state unit of the BJP and at least two pressure groups, one of which filed the FIR. He has subsequently apologised for hurting the sentiments of the state’s Christians.
“Such statements are deeply hurtful and unacceptable in a secular democracy like India,” Meghalaya Mahila Congress president Joplyn Scott Shylla said in a release today. “Meghalaya is known for its peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and harmony among different faiths. Any attempt to target or malign a particular religious community threatens the social fabric and unity of our state.”
