Shillong, Feb 14: The Meghalaya State Skills Development Society (MSSDS) has initiated a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing the communication skills of tourist taxi drivers.
The decision was arrived at during a meeting held between the MSSDS and the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Drivers Association (AKMTTDA) and other stakeholders.
Executive committee member Balajied Jyrwa highlighted the need for drivers to be trained in English and Hindi to better interact with tourists.
The MSSDS assured the association that drivers will be given a stipend or honorarium for attending the training, which will be conducted for a day or two.
Trained drivers will receive stickers indicating they are government-trained, Jyrwa added. While improved communication skills are a short-term solution, he reiterated the association’s demand to restrict outside vehicles from entering Meghalaya’s tourist spots to benefit local drivers.
