Shillong, Feb 9: The Meghalaya government has constituted a judicial inquiry commission under the Commissions of Inquiry Act to investigate the deadly explosion at an illegal coal mine in Mynsngat Thangsko area of East Jaintia Hills, where at least 28 people have lost their lives.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the decision on social media today morning, citing the need to examine the circumstances leading to the blast and fix responsibility.
The announcement came just before the Meghalaya High Court, in a hearing, spoke of the “dereliction of duty” by the authorities concerned with stamping out illegal mining.
Search and rescue teams are still looking for more bodies at the site. A miner caught in the blast, Raju Tamang, succumbed to his injuries in a Shillong hospital today, taking the death toll to 28.
