Shillong, Feb 1: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is yet to decide on its candidates for the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election, according to senior party figure Titostarwell Chyne, who is an MDC in the KHADC.
Speaking to Highland Post, Chyne said the party is awaiting a report from the committee tasked with selecting candidates. “The committee has met two-three times but is yet to finalise the list,” he said, adding that the Garo Hills committee has been fully empowered to decide on candidates.
Chyne also stated that this is not the first time UDP is contesting in Garo Hills, but the number of seats it will contest is yet to be decided.
The UDP has no elected representation in the Garo Hills, either in the GHADC or in the Assembly, though it has had historical success there. When asked about the party’s chances, Chyne said that the UDP would not be contesting if it did not have support on the ground.
