Shillong, Jan 29: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and briefed him on the State’s recent progress and development trajectory.

Sangma highlighted the State’s economic growth, improvements in maternal health and human development indicators, strengthening of large processing units and market linkages to double farmers income.

He also spoke about progress in the development of New Shillong city, expansion of tourism through private sector and community participation, and preparations for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027.

The Chief Minister also outlined the state’s initiatives to preserve and promote indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage, emphasising their role in Meghalaya’s identity and development strategy.

Sangma and Modi also held strategic discussions on Meghalaya’s future growth, an official release said.

Key areas of discussion included sustaining the growth momentum of smaller NER States, continued central support for capital investment, enhancement of EAP ceiling for the State, infrastructure development, fiscal empowerment, and long-term initiatives aimed at strengthening Meghalaya’s economic foundations.

The Chief Minister submitted a set of documents to the Prime Minister outlining the State’s progress, future vision, and key submissions seeking continued support from the Government of India. “These included a note on Meghalaya’s development progress, Vision 2032 for sustained economic growth, and proposals aimed at maintaining the State’s development momentum in alignment with the national vision of Viksit Bharat,” the statement said.

Sangma also expressed appreciation for the Centre’s recognition of the state’s living heritage – the national acknowledgement and global nomination of the ‘Living Root Bridge Cultural Landscape’, it added.
