Shillong, Jan 5: Stakeholders at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has sought the immediate intervention from the Ministry of Education requesting it to appoint a senior most professor as the Vice Chancellor in order to fill up the administrative vacuum, which has handicapped the day-to-day functioning of the university.
The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), North-Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA), Meghalaya Tribal Teachers’ Association (MeTTA-NEHU), and KSU NEHU Unit said the prolonged absence of the regular Vice-Chancellor, Prof. P. S. Shukla has severely affected governance, accountability, and the overall functioning of the University.
In a letter to Secretary Vineet Joshi, the bodies said Shukla has been absent for 415 days, severely impacting governance and academic activities.
The stakeholders highlighted the absence of a functional VC or Acting VC, and the continued absence of the Registrar, which has paralysed academic and administrative operations. They urged the ministry to take immediate action to prevent further disruption.
The letter also mentioned that the Pro VC of the Tura Campus has not assumed charge at the Shillong headquarters despite requests, and the Office of the Pro VC, Shillong Campus, has been vacant for 20 days.
