Jowai, Dec 13: Forty-two girl students of two schools in Jowai completed training on self-defence that was organised by the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under Social Welfare department, West Jaintia Hills District in collaboration with Happy Red Rooster, MMA
The five-day training was conducted for girl students of Kiang Nangbah Higher Secondary School and Dulong SSA Secondary School at the Dulong Community Hall (Old Building), Jowai.
The students received hands-on training in self-defence by certified trained masters of Happy Red Rooster MMA.
The initiative was organised as part of the 16 days campaign to end gender based violence under the banner Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) aiming to empower young girls with skills that enhance safety and resilience.
Assistant Commissioner G.H Passah who attended the programme as chief guest stated that challenges faced by women and girls are societal issues and required collective attention. He noted that gender-based violence remains a serious issue and can be addressed by breaking the silence, increasing awareness, and recognising early sign of abuse. He also highlighted the importance of self-defence training as a practical tool to build confidence and enhance personal safety for girls.
Sub- Inspector H. Saioo of the Jowai Trafic Branch shared tips for online safety advising the girls on how to protect their personal information, recognise suspicious behaviour and to stay safe on digital platforms.
Isaiah Kharmawphlang of Happy Red Rooster, MMA stated that the training conducted over the past week was aimed at giving the girls essential knowledge on self-defence. He emphasised that gaining true skill requires continuous practice, encouraging them to practice regularly so that they can develop real skills. He further encouraged them to share the knowledge they gained with their friends who were unable to attend.
District Social Welfare Officer Y. Najiar spoke about the importance of empowering girls through awareness and skilled based programmes.
