Govt engaging with stakeholders on railways

Shillong, Nov 4: The state government is engaging with stakeholders on the proposed railway line in Khasi-Jaintia Hills, a project that has proven to be a non-starter for years due to opposition from pressure groups.

Meghalaya has only a small railway line that reaches North Garo Hills from Assam. There are calls for an expansion of rail in Garo Hills even as the dream of trains running in Khasi-Jaintia Hills remains a distant one.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said that while there have been discussions and concerns raised by local communities, no concrete decision has been made yet.

He added that the government is focused on creating awareness and building consensus among stakeholders before proceeding with the project.

Goods trains are expected to boost trade and reduce costs of agricultural produce and other products imported into the state. Passenger rail, which is more controversial, would reduce travel costs. However, pressure groups ostensibly fear that railways will lead to uncontrolled mass migration into Meghalaya.

On air travel, Dhar announced that Umroi Airport’s expansion is on track and is expected to be completed within 18 months. The expansion would allow for bigger planes and more aircraft to be handled by the airport and the increase in passengers to boot.

The Deputy Chief Minister informed that the government has urged the executing company to expedite the work to ensure timely completion.

Regarding the Baljek Airport in Tura, Dhar stated that the state has invited the Airports Authority of India for a joint inspection to identify additional land required for expansion. Although talked about for many years, there is no aeroplane service to Baljek at all.
