Shillong, Nov 4: Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has urged citizens, especially the youth, to act responsibly during accidents or disasters by informing authorities instead of recording videos or making reels.
The minister was speaking at an event to distribute emergency responder kits to volunteers under the Yuva Aapda Mitra scheme, here today.
Rymbui highlighted the need for better urban planning and responsible civic behaviour to ensure timely emergency response. He recalled a past fire incident in Shillong, where narrow roads and indiscriminate parking hindered the movement of fire brigades.
He lauded the efforts of volunteers from the Nehru Yuva Kendra, NCC, Bharat Scouts and Guide, and NSS for their commitment to community service and emphasised the importance of preparedness and volunteerism in disaster response, stating that disasters are inevitable, and the best defence lies in readiness and collective action.
The event was organised by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Meghalaya, in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) East Khasi Hills.
Around 434 trained volunteers participated in the programme in the presence of Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, Commissioner & Secretary Matsiewdor War and Lt. Col. Anil Jakhar, Administrative Officer, 2 Meghalaya Battalion NCC, Shillong.
