Shillong, Oct 18: The Central Silk Board, Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO), P-3 Unit, Nongpoh, organised a Muga farmer’s field day programme yesterday at Pamryngai village, Umsning, Ri-Bhoi District.
The event witnessed the active participation of 88 farmers from the village and nearby areas. The programme aimed to explore new potential zones for Muga silkworm rearing and to equip farmers with scientific knowledge, improved rearing techniques, and solutions to field-level challenges.
During the programme, Abhishek Singh, Scientist-C spoke on Muga silkworm rearing technologies, highlighting scientific approaches to enhance productivity and overcome common field challenges. He encouraged farmers to share their experiences and issues, to which he provided practical and context-specific solutions.
Surujeet Kaushik, Senior Field Assistant, emphasised the practical aspects of Muga rearing, conducting live demonstrations that guided farmers on adopting best practices for sustainable production.
Dolly Choudhury, Field Assistant, further enriched the event with a session on Som nursery management and nursery raising techniques.
An extension bulletin titled, “Raising Healthy Host Plants for Muga Silkworm: A Farmer’s Guide” was formally released and distributed among the participants. The publication serves as a comprehensive resource, offering step-by-step guidance on host plant cultivation, maintenance, and management—an essential foundation for successful Muga silkworm rearing.
