Shillong, Sep 16: A large-scale cleaning drive and public awareness campaign was carried out today along the Tura-Damalgre road, particularly targeting the Wakkagre and Lower Damalgre stretches, which have long been plagued by rampant and illegal garbage dumping.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Rerapara C&RD Block in collaboration with the Damalgre United Youth Welfare Society (DUYWS), in response to growing complaints from residents regarding the unsightly and unhygienic conditions of the area.
Taking advantage of the isolated and forested surroundings, several individuals—reportedly including residents from Tura and its outskirts—have been using the roadside as an unofficial dumping ground, creating a severe eyesore and causing a stench that affects daily commuters and local inhabitants alike.
Personnel from Damalgre Police Station, Village Employment Councils (VECs), village elders and leaders, local women’s groups, and youth volunteers from the area also actively participated in the cleanup operation.
Over 50 bags of garbage were collected during the process, necessitating the deployment of disposal vans from the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) for proper disposal of collected waste.
Authorities lauded the active participation of local communities and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public spaces. At the same time, a strong appeal was issued to the public to refrain from illegal dumping.
Officials warned that stern action would be taken against anyone found littering or disposing of garbage in the area moving forward.
The event not only cleared a significant amount of waste but also served as a strong reminder of the need for civic responsibility and sustainable waste management practices.
