The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 has received the backing of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA and Leader of the Opposition in Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma.
Dr Sangma has welcomed the passage of the bill in the Lok Sabha aimed at regulating online gaming, calling it a “much-needed step” to protect citizens from exploitation.
The legislation targets firms that offer fantasy sports and card games where users can deposit and risk money.
“I was very happy yesterday when I saw that this very important bill to regulate the behaviour of the people and prevent them from becoming victims has been brought. A bill to prohibit online gaming and delegitimise any such platforms is indeed a very welcoming step,” Dr Sangma said.
He described the legislation as a conscious and responsible move by lawmakers in response to the growing menace of online gaming addiction and fraud. “This must be welcomed by one and all. So many people have already fallen victim to these platforms, which have been weaponised to rob them by misusing loopholes. This law is necessary to safeguard individuals and families,” he added.
The former CM also emphasised that the law will serve as a preventive measure against the rising social and financial distress caused by unregulated online gaming.
