Shillong, Aug 7: In a major boost to water sports and adventure tourism, the Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the purchase of land for the development of a full-fledged slalom course at the Umtham River in Ri Bhoi district.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the property will be acquired through the Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation (MIDFC) at Rs 21 crore. The project will cover approximately 14 acres, including 8 to 9 acres of tree plantation along the riverbanks.
“This area is already known for slalom, river canoeing, and kayaking events. Meghalaya has performed remarkably well in these disciplines, winning five medals in the last National Games,” Sangma stated. “This new course will take that success further and establish Meghalaya as a national hub for these sports.”
Slalom canoeing, which involves navigating a canoe or kayak through a course of hanging gates on river rapids, is a highly specialized sport requiring a carefully designed course. The Umtham River, with its natural topography and flow, has been identified as the most suitable location for such a facility.
The government believes the course will serve not only as a training and competition venue for professional athletes but also as a destination for adventure sport enthusiasts and tourists. “We are very keen to promote this. Once fully developed, this facility will be unmatched anywhere in India,” Sangma said.
