The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) has decided to push for 80 per cent reservation for locals in private sector jobs, a quota that would match that of public sector employment.
Addressing a press conference today, HNYM president Louis Dohtdong said that the pressure group had written to the Chief Minister on the issue on July 1 but has yet to receive a response.
Companies are usually opposed to job reservations, for efficiency, competitiveness and other reasons but the HNYF pointed to introductions or moves to introduce private sector quotas in states like Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
“We have seen that job availability in the government sector is saturated and the government can no longer create new jobs in the public sector, hence we demand the state government come out with a law that will direct all private sector companies to implement 80 percent job reservation for local youths,” Dohtdong said.
The pressure group will hold public meetings to popularise its new cause in the seven districts of Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills.
