Almost three-quarters of the work required for Phase 3 of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme is complete, Public Health Engineering Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said in the Assembly today.
Tongkhar informed the house that additional funding of Rs 65.57 crore was needed to complete the project, of which Rs 12. 5 crore has been received by Meghalaya.
When East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh asked if funding from AMRUT (the central government mission to establish infrastructure that could ensure adequate robust sewage networks and water supply) will be dovetailed to complete the GSWSS Phase 3, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed that the government was exploring these options.
“At the same time, we received a special package from the Centre, which is special assistance to states for capital expenditure meant for projects that were completed to a certain extent and needed a bit more funding. We got funding of Rs 200 crore, of which we have received the first installment of Rs 100 crore and taken out Rs 12.5 crore,” the Chief Minister said.
The areas in Shillong that will benefit after the completion of this project are those under the Shillong Municipal Board, Shillong Cantonment Board, Mawlai, Nongthymmai, Pynthorumkhrah, Nongmensong and Madanrting.
