Six Bangladeshi nationals, two from Assam and two Meghalayans were arrested by East Jaintia Hills police on Tuesday in a suspected case of human trafficking.
On the evening of that day, a Maruti 800 (AS 11 5670) coming from Silchar failed to stop at an infiltration checkpoint at Umtyra. However, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) were able to nab the people travelling in the car, who were brought to the Khliehriat police station.
The two locals were identified as Dionitrios Khyriem of Mynkrem, West Jaintia Hills, and his wife Merciful Suja of Kuliang, East Jaintia Hills. The two individuals from Assam were identified as Abdul Monnan Laskar of Silchar and Ansari Jamal of Barpeta. These four are suspected of aiding and abetting the illegal entry and transportation of the Bangladeshis.
All six of the foreigners hail from a village called Habiganj, police said. They were named as Farbad Mia, Shaheen Mia, Shano Mia, Kudos Mia, Babul Mia and Saya Khatoon.
They have been charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Foreigners Act.
