The torch relay for the 5th Meghalaya Games began its journey from Shillong to Tura today.
The torch was handed over by Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri (who is also the ex-officio president of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association) to Binningstar Lyngkhoi, famed long distance runner and current athletics coach.
Tura will host the event from January 15 to 20. This is the first time that the Games have been taken outside Shillong. This edition will be inaugurated by President of India Droupadi Murmu, it was announced a few days ago.
The torch will travel to Jowai, Mairang, Nongstoiñ and Williamnagar before reaching Tura on the opening day, the MSOA informed.
“The government is committed to ensure the success of this event and hope that it is one of the best,” Warjri said. “Through this platform the government hopes that some of the athletes will excel in their respective disciplines and, in future, will participate in national and international events, like the Olympics.”
