Acting on specific tip-off, personnel of the 43rd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya yesterday seized more than 5 tonnes of dry betel nuts worth Rs 11 lakh, which were smuggled into India from neighbouring Bangladesh.
The operation was carried out in the general area of Dampukaphal, South Garo hills. The betel nuts were being transported in two vehicles when intercepted and confiscated by the BSF, although the drivers of these vehicles managed to escape.
