More than 5.4 lakh people have been affected due to weather-related events since April 1, 2022 in Meghalaya, with 13 lives lost, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla informed today.
Garo Hills has borne the brunt in the last few days but weather forecasts are bad for the whole state in the next 96 hours.
Since April 1, 581 villages and 5, 43,490 people have been affected in the state. This has also led to a total of 13 human deaths and seven deaths of animals. A total of eight people have also been reported injured. The incessant rains have left public roads, houses, shops, schools and other infrastructure damaged.
Shylla informed that the Deputy Commissioners and other officials are closely monitoring the flood situation, especially in Garo Hills, and Rs 50 lakh has been given to the district administrations for emergency relief.
The minister also informed that the 15th Finance Commission earmarked money specifically for disaster management, which Meghalaya can draw upon.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department today warned that extremely heavy rainfall will continue in the Northeast including Meghalaya during the next five days (June 13-17) due to strong lower level Southerly/Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal.
Today, Shella recorded 335.0mm rainfall, Mawkyrwat 320.0, Sohra RKM 330.8, Sohra 293.0, Resubelpara 145.6, Jowai 117.4, Khliehriat 132.2, Mawphlang 93.8, Tikrikilla 95.6, Tura 70.0, Ampati 65.0, Nongstoiñ 42.0, Shillong 37.0, Baghmara 36.6 and Nongpoh 21.0.
