The Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong felicitated five teachers of Shillong schools with the ‘Nation Builder Award’ in an event celebrating Teachers’ Day and World Literacy Day today at Shillong Club.
The award is conferred at the club’s level after a detailed evaluation process which involves the participation of students and the school principal.
Achala Agrawala of Lady Keane Girl’s Higher Secondary School, June Kharkamni of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, M S U Mazumder of Islamia Secondary School, Puja B. Das of Lumparing Vidyapith Secondary School and Prachi Gupta of Kendriya Vidyalaya, NEHU were conferred with the award.
The programme started with a welcome address by Rtn (Prof.) Devesh Walia, President of the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong, who emphasised that there is a need to build the nation with the help of committed teachers who devote their life for the same. In the present era, to build a stronger nation is of utmost importance and NEP is trying to do so.
Rtn Pubalee Bujarbaruah, Assistant Governor, RI District 3240, introduced the TEACH initiative being implemented under Rotary International Literacy Mission. She stated that Rotary is involved in a number of ways to help bridge the gap between the students, schools and the system.
The programme was followed by a motivating speech by the chief guest of the programme B D R Tiwari, Commissioner and Secretary Department of Education, Government of Meghalaya who stressed on the importance of education and explained the gap between the teaching and requirements of the industries.
Tiwari praised various activities and involvement of Rotarians to support the various government schemes and their applications in the rural areas.
He also said that education is such a field wherein the support and contribution of Rotary and other such organisations is required for successful translation and implementation of various government initiatives.
Further, Tiwari stated that skill-based education will help eradicate illiteracy and is an important component of the National Education Policy 2020.
Rahul S. Chatterjee, the keynote speaker on World Literacy Day discussed the importance of the ability to think creatively so that we are able to work for the growth and development of the nation.
Rtn Krishna Das Gupta, Literacy Chair of Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong congratulated the awardees for their invaluable contribution towards nurturing young minds and thanked everyone for participating and making the event successful.
