A one-day training programme on “Millets for opportunity in natural farming” for 40 farmers of Ri Bhoi district was organised today to celebrate the International Year of Millets, to increase awareness production and its consumption.
The programme was organised under the project Outscaling of Natural farming by KVK, Ri-Bhoi under ICAR Research Complex.
Kisan Morcha president Plenty Makri attended the programme as the chief guest along with the SMS of KVK and staff.
KVK in-charge head and SMS (Agronomy) Dr. Meghna Sarma briefed the farmers about the importance millets as nutri-cereals and explained them about the package of practices for cultivation of millets under natural farming, their ability to adapt in harsh climate etc and requested them for its cultivation in every household for a healthy planet.
SMS (Soil Science) Dr. Popiha Bordoloi emphasized on the importance of soil fertility management for millet cultivation under natural farming to maintain soil health and productivity and stressed on practicing it to build a healthy nation with sustainable agriculture.
SMS (Home Science) Eliza Syiemlieh spoke on the nutritional benefits of millet crop. She said the crop is super food and has numerous health benefits that make a great choice for those who improve their overall health and wellness.
Farmers were also taught diversified millet based recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks, beverages etc. to include in their daily diet for a healthy lifestyle at the training programme.
