Four MLAs from Meghalaya, Himalaya M. Shangpliang, Benedict R. Marak, Ferlin C A Sangma, and Samuel M. Sangma today joined the BJP at a programme organised at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
The MLAs joined BJP in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni, Assam Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sharma, BJP national spokesperson and North East in-charge Sambit Patra, BJP national secretary Rituraj Sinha, Meghalaya BJP president Ernest Mawrie, and other senior functionaries of the party.
Later, all four MLAs met BJP national president J P Nadda, who welcomed them into the party fold.
It may be mentioned that Shangpliang who belonged to the Trinamool Congress along with Marak and Sangma who belonged to NPP have resigned from their party and from the membership in the Assembly.
However, Samuel Sangma has not resigned from his House membership except informing the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh that he had withdrawn his associate membership with the UDP.
Rituraj Sinha addressed the press after the joining and stated that the BJP campaign ‘Modi for Development, BJP for Meghalaya’ is going on in full-swing in Meghalaya, and the State is ready to join the PM Narendra Modi’s vision for North East and become part of the resulting development and growth. He welcomed the MLAs and said the party will grow even stronger with their presence and support.
Sambit Patra spoke about the political careers of the joining MLAs and expressed confidence that with their support Meghalaya will also experience the same development that other North Eastern states are experiencing under various BJP governments.
Himanta Biswa Sharma also welcomed the MLAs and stated that three BJP state governments in the North East have been elected twice consecutively and this goes on to show that the acceptance of the BJP in the region has become permanent.
Sarma said that to carry the momentum forward, the BJP is now preparing for the elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
He said in Meghalaya BJP will take its tally from two MLAs at present to form a government that will further the welfare policies of Narendra Modi in the State.
