Acting on a specific tip-off, personnel of the 172nd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya intercepted a bus yesterday carrying a large quantity of betel nuts from Umkiang near the international border with Bangladesh in East Jaintia Hills.
The consignment was worth Rs 12 lakh, a BSF press release said today. Four persons including the driver and co-driver were apprehended as they were unable to justify the presence of such a large quantity of betel nuts and as they did not have valid documentation regarding the consignment, the nuts were seized by the border guards.
The apprehended persons revealed that they were coming from Tripura and consignment was being taken to ISBT Guwahati, the BSF said.
The arrested persons and seized items were handed over to police in Umkiang for further legal action.
