Thirty women farmers have been enrolled under the skill development programme on eri spinning, eri gicha and natural dye under the Meghalaya State skills Development Society.
The programme was launched by the office of the North Garo Hills District Sericulture Officer at the Sericulture office at Jonglapara in Resubelpara yesterday.
The month long programme will conclude on July 31.
The trainees will be equipped with skills on eri spinning, eri gicha – the process of producing yarn out of cocoon and natural dye – the art of dying silk thread using natura plants.
Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner, ZJ Sangma said farmers who have keen interest in sericulture activities will largely be benefitted from the programme. “Sericulture farming is a sustainable activity and farmers who are technically skilled in the area will not only empower themselves but will also create local employment for others as well”, he added.
Sangma further pressed upon the trainees to take pride in whatever work they engage in and take advantage of the programme by making the most of it.
Highlighting the objective of the programme, District Sericulture Officer incharge, SG Momin said the programme aim to enhance the skill of the seri farmers by providing them logistics support, market linkages, etc, thereby empowering local entrepreneurs for sustainable employment.
She urged trainees to have vision in taking up sericulture farming as a long term practice in order to succeed in the field of silk production.
